Smoke/Fire Damage

Do’s & Don’ts

The aftermath of a fire leaves a devastating amount of smoke and soot damage. The walls, ceilings and floors can be covered and stained with black soot.  The lingering smell of smoke can be overwhelming and debris can be dangerous to navigate.

Fire damage cleanup is a difficult task that is best left to professionals.

When you experience this kind of damage, DO:

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot from being imbedded into your upholstery and carpeting.
  • Keep your hands clean. Soot on hands can soil upholstery, woodwork and walls.
  • Place old linens on rugs, upholstery and areas where there is traffic.
  • Call the nearest SystemCare location to assess the damage and begin the cleaning process.
  • Contact your insurance company to make a claim.

But DO NOT:

  • Do not attempt to clean yourself.
  • Attempt to operate any electrical appliances that may have been close to the fire.
  • Use any canned or packaged food or beverages that may have been stored close to fire as they may be contaminated.
  • Send your clothing to the drycleaners. Smoke/soot stained clothing require specialized cleaning.
  • Wait to call our office for professional help!
